Papers, 1814-1969, containing biographical information, personal correspondence, military records, and printed materials. The biography series contains several compiled accounts of General Wood's life and a photograph of him and his staff in 1862. The personal correspondence consists of letters Wood wrote to his wife and brothers during the Civil War and a letter from Jere Clemens. He describes daily camp life and family matters. The printed materials contain sheet music and special edition newspapers with information concerning the Civil War. The bulk of the collection contains a wide variety of military records including supply lists, military orders, reports of small pox, a disagreement over Wood's dispersal of company funds, and a court of inquiry concerning his conduct at the Battle of Shiloh. Of particular value are various company and regimental descriptions of the battles of Corinth, Chickamauga, Murfreesboro, and Perryville. Two Civil War maps of Franklin, Tenn. and Bardstown, Ky., are located in CL-1. The map collections are described separately from this collection.

Clemens was born on 1814 Dec. 28, in Huntsville, Madison Co., Ala. He attended LaGrange College and graduated from the University of Ala. in 1833. Sterling A. Martin Wood was born in 1823 in Florence, Ala. and studied law at Columbia, Tenn. He formed several legal partnerships until 1857, then was solicitor of the fourth judicial circuit, and represented Lauderdale County in the state legislature.
